School Excursions
We currently have two types of tours available to schools and universities. Students can visit our facilities to learn about Westernport Water’s local water supply, water catchment, and the drinking water treatment process. Or they can see how we capture and treat wastewater and produce recycled water and biosolids.
School tours are free and must be booked at least 4 weeks in advance via the form below.

Tour details
This tour gives students an appreciation for their local tap water, and is suitable for learning about the water cycle, catchments, drinking water and the environment.
The tour of Candowie Reservoir and Ian Bartlett Water Treatment Plant incorporates the reservoir, dam wall, spillway and outlet tower, plus a walk through the treatment plant to see how our drinking water is safely produced.
- Students Age This tour is suitable for students from Grade 3 to year 12. We can also adapt the tour for university students.
- Duration – approximately 1 hour.
- Group size – We can cater for groups of a minimum of 10 students up to a maximum of 25 students at one time.
- Staff/child Ratios – We recommend a minimum of one adult per 10 students. It is the school’s responsibility to ensure that Department of Education adult-to-student supervision requirements are met. Supervision and student management is the school’s responsibility.
- The tour is both indoor and outdoor
Bookings
Bookings must be made at least 4 weeks prior to date of tour.
Tours and excursions:
- are free of charge, but subject to availability
- will only be conducted between the hours of 10am and 3pm, or by arrangement
- take approximately 1 hour, depending on site and individual group requirements
- must be booked using an online booking form at least 4 weeks in advance

Down the Drain to use again tour
Tour details
Visit the Cowes Wastewater Treatment plant which treats all sewage/wastewater from the Phillip Island and San Remo area. Learn about the treatment process, and how we produce recycled water and biosolids that are reused in our community.
The tour takes around an hour and includes a walk around the plant to see the sewage treatment process, recycled water treatment, production of biosolids, as well as a short trip by bus to Pyramid Rock to see the ocean outfall.
Students will learn about what happens to water and wastewater after it goes down the drain, the 3P’s (Pee, Poo and Paper!), water conservation, the environment and sustainability.
- Students age – This tour is suitable for students from Grade 3 to year 12. We can also adapt the tour for university students.
