Vacancy – First Nations Board Delegate
Westernport Water has an exciting governance opportunity available for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to become an Independent Aboriginal (or Torres Strait Islander) Delegate of the Westernport Water Board and Board Committee(s).
Who are we?
Westernport Water is a regional water corporation providing drinking water, wastewater and recycled water services to more than 23,000 customers on Phillip Island (Millowl) and adjacent waterline communities between Archies Creek and The Gurdies on Bass Coast, Victoria.
Westernport Water services a geographical region of 300 square kilometres, with a head office located in Newhaven and three treatment facilities, one in Cowes and two on the mainland at Coronet Bay and Almurta.
Westernport Water acknowledges the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land, sea and water on which we operate.
About the role
- This one-year appointment is a part-time role.
- Previous Board/governance experience is not a requirement, and candidates of all ages are encouraged to apply.
- Westernport Water will support the successful applicant to develop skills and experience to apply for a future full directorship within the water sector or elsewhere.
- During the period of engagement with Westernport Water, there will be the opportunity to provide insight and share knowledge into a broad range of areas, including environmental and water management and its connection to the Aboriginal community and Traditional Owners.
- At Board level, this will include the areas of policy, strategic planning and strategic plan execution oversight, risk identification, treatment and management.
- The delegate will also have the opportunity to join one or two of the Board Committee areas:
- Audit & Risk (ARC)
- People, Safety & Community (PSCC)
- Infrastructure, Sustainability & Innovation (ISIC)
- The role will include obligations relating to confidential information and conflicts of interest, which will be reflected in the employment contract.
- The delegate does not have a formal decision-making role or voting rights on the board.
- The time commitment for this role includes attendance at Board meetings across the 12-month period. Each meeting currently runs for between one – three hours. This duration is expected to increase in 2025, as the number of scheduled Board meetings will reduce from eight to six, annually.
- Remuneration: will be at the non-chair director rate, which is currently $18,497 per annum plus super, plus a Board Committee Member payment of $5740.02 per annum (no super paid) per committee. Based on participation in two committees the total remuneration is circa $30k. Reimbursement for travel is also provided. It is anticipated the role will commence in the final quarter of 2024 on a date agreed between Westernport Water and the successful candidate.
- Mentoring and support will be provided for the delegate, including from the Board Chair (or other nominated Board Director), the Managing Director, the Board and Mob Jobs as an external party.
