Let’s work together for a shared future

Bass Coast Reconciliation Network is proud to support NAIDOC Week through an exciting events program that features the talents and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

The event program includes a showcase of artistic talent at the Bass Coast South Gippsland Reconciliation Group’s annual art exhibition, a concert and conversation with musician and winner of the 2016 X Factor Australia, Isaiah Firebrace, First Peoples Film Festival and a Community Celebration.

“The breadth of events represents the growing commitment to reconciliation and recognition across Bass Coast,” said Bass Coast Reconciliation Network Chair, Geoff Russell.

Bass Coast Reconciliation Network is organising the Community Celebration to be held at the Cowes Cultural Centre on Tuesday 9 July between 11am and 1pm. The event will commence with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country. There will be information stalls and activities that reflect the NAIDOC Week theme of Voice, Treaty, Truth.

The event will conclude with the launch of the inaugural Bass Coast NAIDOC Awards program. This program will commence in 2020 and recognise the outstanding contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have shown in their life, community or chosen field. Started in honour of Ruby Gates, the Lifetime Achievement award will bear her name.

“Ruby Gates is a perfect example of a reconciliation champion in our community,” said Geoff.

“Ruby instigated the raising of the first Aboriginal Flag at the Cowes Shire offices in 1993. She was a trailblazer for reconciliation and she has left a lasting legacy for us to follow.”

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

Bass Coast Reconciliation Network comprises Traditional Custodians, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community members, Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Yowengarra Bun Wurrung Balug Clans Aboriginal Corporation, Bass Coast South Gippsland Reconciliation Group, Bass Coast Shire Council, Westernport Water, Phillip Island Nature Parks and Bass Coast Health.
